Against the Silence
– Short Doc
Germany’s largest Uyghur diaspora is based in Munich. Around 700 Uyghur women and men live in the Bavarian capital because they are persecuted and detained in their homeland, East Turkestan in what is now China.
In recent years, the Uyghurs have drawn international attention due to political tensions and human rights violations. Reports of mass internment camps and forced labor have brought their situation into the spotlight and sparked global concern. Uyghurs continue to fight for recognition of their cultural identity and for protection from state repression. There are reports of widespread human rights abuses against this ethnic minority, including mass detention camps, forced labor, surveillance, and restrictions on religious practices. The Chinese government claims these measures are necessary to counter terrorism and separatism in the region.
In Munich, Uyghurs are often involved in cultural activities to preserve and promote their traditional culture. These include events such as concerts, dance performances, culinary festivals, and cultural exchange programs.
In addition, Uyghur community organizations and activists in Munich frequently advocate for the rights and well-being of Uyghurs in China. They organize protests, information events, and lobbying efforts to draw attention to the situation of their compatriots in Xinjiang and to mobilize support.
The Uyghurs in Munich are part of a larger diasporic community that works worldwide for the concerns of their ethnic group while also striving to integrate into their new home and become an active part of German society.
